About Adopting From PeanutButterPigs Guinea Pig Rescue

  • PeanutButterPigs Guinea Pig Rescue processes adoptions by family, not by individual animal. If you're interested in adopting—or even just considering it in the near future—we encourage you to submit an application. When reviewing applications, we don’t focus on whether a specific guinea pig is the right fit for you. Instead, we evaluate whether your home is a suitable and loving environment for any of our guinea pigs. Once your application is approved, you'll be able to meet, place a hold, and adopt any guinea pig currently in our care—with the exception of specialty breeds or special needs animals, which may require additional experience.
  • We do not accept same-day adoption. All adoptions require an approved application before any animals can go home.
  • We do not accept walk-in visits. Our rescue operates by appointment only. All visits must be scheduled in advance, even if you're just looking to meet the guinea pigs.
  • Not All Applications Will Result in an Adoption. While we truly appreciate every family that applies, applying to adopt does not guarantee you'll take a guinea pig home right away—or at all. Sometimes we don't have enough guinea pigs at the time of adoption, we may not have any guinea pig's suitable for your household at the time or we may feel that it's not the right time for you to adopt, and that more preparation or research may be needed. We will try our best to match you with you newest member of your forever family but just be aware of this before applying! Wait to pick out names until you receive your adoption approval in your inbox 🎉
  • We do not accept holds on guinea pigs until after you have adoption approval. To ensure the best match for both our guinea pigs and adopting families, we do not place holds on any animals until your application has been reviewed and approved. This is because every guinea pig is unique—some may have specific needs, behaviors, or quirks that aren’t the right fit for every home. Once you are approved for adoption we can work with you to see if the guinea pig you have your heart set on is right for you!

I want a guinea pig before my loved ones birthday, can you take a look at my application before then?

We understand wanting to surprise a loved one with a guinea pig for their birthday—it’s such a sweet idea. However, we don’t offer rush processing or prioritize applications based on specific dates, including birthdays or holidays.

Our first priority is making sure each guinea pig goes to a safe, prepared, and loving home. That means taking the time to carefully review every application and not making any promises until we’re confident the match is right.

If your loved one’s birthday is coming up, we recommend letting them know about the adoption plan! You could surprise them with a gift bag of guinea pig supplies, take them shopping for our pre-approved items, or print out a “future piggy parent” certificate. Then, once your application is approved, you can come choose the perfect guinea pig together!

Thank you for understanding—and for wanting to give one of our piggies a great home!

Are your Guinea Pig's Neutered/spayed?

No, due to guinea pigs commonly reacting poorly to anesthesia and the fatality risk involved in neutering/spaying, we do not fix any of the guinea pigs here at our rescue unless it is for medical reasons. However, we do occasionally receive a guinea pig who has been already spayed/neutered.

Can Guinea Pigs be housed with my rabbit?

No, unfortunately Rabbits carry a bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica that is very commonly spread to guinea pig's and can cause upper respiratory infections, Calcified Bulla Syndrome, or even death. It is very important that guinea pigs and rabbits are never housed together or even in the same room.

Adoption Application

Thank you so much for your interest in adopting from our Guinea Pig Rescue! We are truly excited that you are considering opening your heart and home to one of our guinea pigs. Before you complete your application, please take a moment to read through the following information.

We ask that you take your time to answer each question thoughtfully and in detail. Just like in an interview, your responses are important to us. We're not only interested in the answers themselves but also in learning more about you and your passion for guinea pigs. We want to get a sense of your dedication to providing a loving and caring environment for a guinea pig. The more detailed your answers, the better!

Please note that if any of your responses are very brief (less than one sentence), we may either request a follow-up interview for more in-depth answers or ask you to resubmit your application with more detailed responses. This helps us ensure that each adopter is fully prepared for the responsibility of guinea pig care.
