Thinking of becoming a foster?

Fostering with PeanutButterPigs Guinea Pig Rescue is a meaningful, long-term volunteer opportunity perfect for those with experience in guinea pig care or a strong desire to help in rescue. Fostering is ideal if you want the joy of having a guinea pig without the full-life commitment or if you simply want to bring more happiness into your home. By fostering, you’re providing a safe, loving home for a guinea pig (or several!) while helping them gain valuable socialization skills. Studies show that guinea pigs who are fostered become more social, making them more likely to be adopted into loving, permanent homes.

Your role as a foster gives these little ones a second chance at a happy life and opens space for us to rescue more guinea pigs in need. Join us in making a difference one foster at a time!

What is the responsibility of a foster?

At PeanutButterPigs Guinea Pig Rescue, we provide all necessary supplies—like cages, hay & pellets, carriers, bowls, and vet care! — All you need to provide is the home, the love & Veggies!

While fostering, here’s a brief overview of our foster's responsibilities:

- Daily Essentials: Provide unlimited hay, approved pellets, fresh water, vitamin C, and fresh veggies each day.
- Appropriate Indoor Housing: Keep a suitably sized cage indoors, protected from drafts, pets, and extreme temperatures (below 65°F or above 85°F).
- Primary Caregiver Responsibility: As the primary caregiver, oversee all care, ensuring that any children are supervised when handling the guinea pigs.
- Regular Cleaning: Spot-clean the cage daily and perform a thorough cleaning weekly to keep their environment fresh and hygienic.
- Grooming and Hygiene: Trim nails and brush them as needed.
- Monthly Health Checks: Weigh your fosters, tracking any changes in a weight chart to help catch health issues early.
- Stay in touch: Contact us if you notice any signs of illness, appetite changes, weight loss, behavioral changes, or injuries, or if anything else seems unusual.

Thank you for taking these steps to keep your foster guinea pigs healthy, happy, and ready for adoption!
